The Barnevelder originated in the Dutch town of Barneveld. It was bred for the production of nice brown eggs.
It does best when it has a decent sized run or the ability to free range. The hens go broody easily and make good mothers however you should still get around 180-190 eggs per year from a new hen.
They are a beautifully coloured bird and although there are several types of this breed the double laced is the most popular.
It is a dual purpose breed with hens reaching 6-7lbs in weight at maturity.
