Pekin Ducks were bred from the Mallard in China as a domesticated meat duck. They do lay eggs but are primarily regarded as a meat duck. A mature Pekin will weigh 4 - 5 kgs.
They can not fly great distances and are happiest with free access to water. They are a very social breed, preferring to go around in groups in an upright "follow the leader" waddle.
They are a nice addition to a property if you have the space for them. Ours do well on a daily diet of maize, barley and free foraging around the farm.
